New year, new post....

Posted January 5, 2009

I keep intending to update this place, and then putting it off.  But I suppose if I expect anyone to read it, it should have some reasonably timely content.  So here you go.

The holidays were, well, the holidays.  I did have an amazing birthday - which was rad, because that hasn't happened too many times before.  Usually my birthdays are pretty lame.  But this time I went to Disneyland with friends then dinner with friends and family on my birthday (December 4), then on Friday night (December 5) I hit up this rad 80s club called Clockwork Orange in Hollywood with my best friend Chris, his brother, and my friend Sarah.  I am not much of a dancer but I had a really good time and managed to not feel self-conscious while dancing to my favorite 80s hits :)

I'm not usually a big fan of Christmas, but this year was pretty cool.  Did the usual Christmas eve thing at my great-uncle Joe's house, and I got to see my cousins Mike and Cheryl.  They've lived in Texas for a really long time, and although I saw Mike last xmas I haven't seen Cheryl in years.  So that was good.

Snapped a few shots at Joe's that I thought I'd share (remember, all photos are clickable links to my flickr!):

Later tonight or tomorrow I'll catch you up on the rest (from Christmas til now).  There's a lot to tell.

Christmas day and more photos from AfA...

Posted December 25, 2008

Well, I actually got done processing these photos late last Friday evening, and I had intended to have them up Saturday.  Life happens, though, and Saturday was a busy day that culminated in a ridiculous all-night party and consumption of various intoxicating substances, which probably wasn't such a great idea considering I already felt like I was getting sick.

As you've probably already guessed, I did get sick, and spent most of the next three days sleeping.  Finally felt better just in time for Christmas Eve, and now that it's Christmas day and the gift-giving is over, I thought I'd get my shit together and share these photos with everyone....

Remember, every photo I post on here is clickable, and will take you to my Flickr, where you can get higher-res versions.

The Vesneski brothers, Trevor (L) and Tyler (R) were my neighbors for years and years.  I rarely see Trevor, and haven't seen Tyler in quite a few years, so it was cool to spot them both at this event.  No idea who the beautiful dark-haired girl in the middle is, but I wasn't surprised to see her with Trevor.  The more things change, the more they stay the same, right?

This is Stevie.

afa-32

I have to say that out of all the beautiful women I saw at AfA (and there were quite a few), Stevie was definitely the sexiest (is that a word? or should I say 'most sexy'?).  It might have been due to the fact that her style was utterly rad - leggings, cute top, a little bit of black lacy bra showing, and the piano-key scarf - shit was hot!

afa-31

This is Steven Jay, another photographer who was showing that night.  This man is insanely talented, I suggest you check out his work.

More charity haircut goodness!

afa-35

This guy was pushing a classic preppy style that I really liked.

afa-36

And, last but not least, this is Inverse.  The aforementioned Trevor Vesneski does vocals here, and bass licks come from my good friend and local celebrity Paul Bahou (check out that hair! is this a rock show or a Pantene Pro-V commercial?).  I'm not too well-acquainted with the other band members, but I'm sure they're fine gentlemen to know: Sal and Dom (guitars/vocals), Topher (drums), and Mike (keys/vocals).

Basically, Inverse rocks, and you should listen to them.

Like I said on Myspace, I would end this with a 'Merry Christmas' or other typical holiday salutation, but it wouldn't be sincere really.  I'm not a big Holiday person.  So let's try this instead:

Got a chance to post-process about half the pics I took at AfA, and I wanted to throw them up here for everyone to check out.

First, the rarest of the rare: pics OF me.  As those who know me personally will attest, I'm not a big fan of being photographed, and I spend most of my time behind the camera rather than in front of it.  But some of my friends were nice enough to share some pics of me from Saturday night:

these are both from Brian @ KULOR photography (check out his Flickr)

and these two are courtesy of the ever-smiling Moriah:

shoes? check. watch? check. weird lazy eye type look? got that too.

Now that we've got that out of the way, let's move on to pictures of some other, prettier (though not better-dressed) people.

Met this girl Stacey Saturday night - she's rad, and also quite a talented photographer herself

afa-1

This band is called Black Party Politics, and they're rad. Tons of energy. You should check them out.

I know it feels weird that this is the only shot out of the whole night that's in color - but I just couldn't lose that great blue-ish hue. This girl is beautiful. Unfortunately I have no idea who she is.

afa-6

The famous (or infamous?) Paul Bahou ghosted through for a sec:

afa-7

I have no idea who this girl is either, but she's quite photogenic, as evidenced below. The guy in the sweet overcoat I met and he's really cool but I'm an asshole and forgot his name :/

Our hosts at Kromatic Hair were offering $15 haircuts to benefit the Our Nicholas foundation, and quite a few of the crowd took them up on the offer. This guy's shag-hawk has a rad WWII, 101st Airborne kinda thing going on:

afa-11

and his friend didn't miss the haircut party either:

afa-12

snapped a quick shot of the aforementioned Brian of KULOR photography, working his photobooth setup:

afa-13

One of Kromatic's sexy, friendly employees (whose name I also failed to learn, of course):

afa-14

you really should go there and get your hair cut, all the employees are friendly AND great-looking (that's important, you know).

this guy was videotaping all night, hopefully my constant flash-bouncing didn't wreck his video:

afa-15

My good friends the Shaw sisters showed up to support me, along with their Mom - I love you all! This is Molly and Mom, Allison is somewhere in this set as well.

afa-16

Ivan was doing his thing on the microphone all night, keeping everyone updated on what was going on:

afa-17

More friends - big thanks to my favorite little sis Megan and our friend Vanessa for showing me love!

afa-18

This is Liz. Liz's display was next to mine. Liz is beautiful, talented, and friendly. You all want to marry her. Or you would if you met her.

afa-19

The interior of Kromatic was PACKED with people checking out all the great art, getting haircuts, listening to the DJ, and generally having a fucking great time!

afa-20

afa-21

OK, now I really feel like an asshole. I talked to these amazing girls from the Boonies dance crew for like 5 minutes, and not only did I miss photographing their dance set, I forgot both their names! :(

afa-22

There's Allison! The Shaw sisters showing off some real sisterly love - or not!

afa-23

This is Ivan, the man who made this all possible. I swear he wasn't this sexy in High School! It must be the beard...

afa-24

More cute, friendly girls whose names I forgot. Yeah, I'm an asshole. I think we've established that already. What can I say, I was dropped on my head a lot as a child. Or maybe it was the drugs.

afa-26

This guy must not have liked being photographed - he busted out the crazy eyes on me!

afa-27

And we can't forget the ever-present pics of my awesome little brother Evan - including this one where he's being attacked by his equally awesome GF Ashlynn and our friend Molly:

Yeah, he broods sometimes. It's like a WB show.

Anyway, that's all for now - at least until I get to the rest of my photos, which include some great shots of my favoritest local band Inverse, along with even more paparazzi-style crowd harassment shots. Until then, enjoy!

Artists for Autism

Posted December 16, 2008

Saturday night's 'Artists for Autism' event in Temecula was my first time publicly showing my photography, and after taking a few days to reflect on the event, I wanted to talk a little about how it went.  Also I figured it would be a good way to start this blog out on a positive note - and really, there just aren't a lot of those available lately.

First of all, it was awesome to be involved with an event that benefitted a great charity like the Our Nicholas Foundation, and I want to throw a big thank you to Ivan of Ivan Promotions for giving me the chance to participate in this show.  Everything was planned out really well and the whole event went off smoothly despite the rain - in fact, the rain just gave Ivan a chance to show off how smoothly he could implement his backup plan!

I got some really great feedback on my work, and I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to approach me and give me their input.  Positive feedback definitely helps keep me motivated!  Also a big thank you to all the girls who asked to take pictures with me - that was definitely good for an ego-booster!

Lots of friends showed up - Allison & Molly, Justine, Sara, brother Evan + GF Ashlynn, adopted little sis Megan, damn there are too many to list here.  Anyway thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting me, I was pretty nervous about the whole thing but it turned out pretty damn well!

I also did my paparazzi thing and shoved my camera in everyone's faces, took WAY too many pics (at least it seems that way now that I have to process them!) and generally had a fucking good time.  I was random and crazy and all over the place, bouncing from activity to activity, which I love, and there was a lot to do so it kept me going.

Anyway, check out a few pics of me from the show, and as I process them I'll try to post more pics from the night itself.
